The 200 block is where WestSide earns its density. Walk in from the 100 side and within thirty metres you've got a ton of options. You decide... lunch, jewellery, a new pair of jeans, someone who can fix that neck strain from phone scrollin'. It's the stretch that does the most work per square metre of any block in the WestSide.

Sutto Cafe is pulling its morning crowd and Dax opposite too. There are two independent cafes on the same street... both busy because the workers can't function without the flat whites. The lattes at Sutto are reliable, the staff stacked two deep so regulars never have to wait. Before 9am you get a little thank you discount too. Yeah — that's the alpha.

Asian Satay Noodle House and Kami Sushi together define what WestSide does at lunchtime better than any tourist TripAdvisor review could. Flavour that doesn't require a Michelin-length explanation. The tradies know. The office workers know. The Thursday crowd knows.

"Three jewellers in one block. Nobody planned that... and yet it works in the WestSide."

Grieves Jewellers, Michael Hill, and Pascoes sit within a few hundred metres of each other... and somehow all of them are trading. Grieves is the one the locals point to when someone asks where to go — because it's been there since the beginning of time.

Farmers and Hallensteins bring the national retail weight. They're the anchors that draw foot traffic from elsewhere... and when that foot traffic arrives, the independent operators around them benefit. That's how a street like this works when it's working well.

Urban Retreat is the wellness option in 200 West... a massage and beauty business that has regulars who plan their week around their appointment. The Physio sits in the same complex, which says something about the logic of that building. Smart Mobiles and 2degrees extend their tech offer. Mphosis Hair is the kind of salon you hear about from a friend before you find it yourself.

Charm Eatery & Bar and Thai Orchid anchor the evening offer on this end of the street. It's the reason to stay at the end of the workday or return at sunset.

The 200 block is the spine of WestSide. Everything either side leans on what happens here.

The Street Walk series walks Heretaunga Street West block by block — the 100, the 200, the 300, the 400. Four articles. Every business. Come back for the next one.
